Metrics for Measuring Church Health

In the video above and the downloadable material below, Dr. Mike Clarensau, Research Coordinator for the Acts 2 Journey, provides insights on a series of metrics for measuring church health that move beyond attendance and giving. Here brief definitions of each metric:

  • The missional effectiveness metric measures attendance to conversions (the AC ratio).
    • "How many of us did it take to win someone to Christ this year?"
  • The assimilation metric measures conversions to water baptisms (the CW ratio). It asks
    • Did we keep them long enough enough to guide them toward water baptism?
  • The kingdom growth metric measures attendance to water baptisms (the AW ratio).
    •  How effectively are we adding to the kingdom?
  • The discipleship and mobilization metric measures Spirit baptisms to conversions (the CS ratio).
    •  Are we effectively discipling and mobilizing our people?
  • The reproduction metric measures attendance to Spirit baptisms (the AS ratio).
    • Are we producing Spirit-empowered leaders for our future?

Among the items available for download below is a worksheet to help you calculate these metrics in your own setting. The PDFs below also provide numerical targets for what is considered healthy in each metric.
